Thanks so much for stopping by, I’m Jemma. I’ve been battling with my weight for most of my adult life and my relationship with food has been everything from normal to extreme – and all the shades in between! This blog documents my journey to health and happiness and will hopefully provide you with a glimpse into my journey, exploring recipes and techniques that might help you on your journey too.
It’s not the very beginning, but I think this is a pretty good place to start. Here goes! Just over a year ago I decided that the yo-yo dieting had to stop. I made a decision that I no longer wanted my days or my life to be ruled by food and food decisions, and the only way for me to get to a place where that is possible is to re-calibrate my relationship with food. Following my experience with juicing and the transformative power that living plant based had on my body and my mind I knew that this had to figure in my daily habits, unfortunately I just had no idea how to make it happen.
Juicing is hard work and I take my hat off to those of you who manage to juice three meals a day, while working full time, intense jobs and keeping an active social life. I genuinely don’t know how you do it!
So while I knew I wanted to get to a place where I was filling my body with all of these amazing nutrients, I didn’t know how to do that in any way other than juicing.
Six months later while perusing Mind, Body, Green I came across Rich Roll’s online course, The Ultimate Guide To Plant-Based Nutrition and I knew this was where I needed to get to. I bought the course, watched it religiously within about three days and was totally bought in. The reality of going plant-based in a predominantly meat eating world though, is not that simple. Even with the best will in the world!
In the few weeks that followed I found myself consumed by thoughts of how I could make this work and I stumbled upon the 30-day green smoothie challenge from Simple Green Smoothies and knew at once that it was for me. After just one day drinking the green stuff for breakfast I knew this was a habit I could keep without even having to try. Unlike juicing, blending was quick, easy and created little clean-up. Just what I needed! After seven days I moved from the green smoothie challenge onto Fresh Start 21, a three week plant based cleanse. It was quite a shift from my usual regime and the prep work involved really was intense but I did it. I got to 21 days without feeling, hungry, deprived and thinking about food 24 hours a day. I bounced out of bed in the mornings with a spring in my step and people began to comment on me looking fresher. My concentration at work improved ten fold, no more mid afternoon slumps or distractions. I was able to clearly focus and get things done quicker and easier than I can ever remember. Suffice to say, I was hooked.
After 21 days on the cleanse I shifted back into having the occasional portion of meat and fish but I have been steering clear of dairy ever since as I’ve found that by doing so I’ve been able to completely eradicate the debilitating symptoms that I suffer as a result of my adenomyosis. I’ve gone from being told by doctors that I will just have to live with the symptoms as the only other treatment (outside of the ones that I have tried and that have failed) is a hysterectomy (which at 29 years old isn’t really an option), to having a 26-28 day, largely pain free and light cycle for the first time since my periods began aged 13. I wouldn’t have believed it if it hadn’t happened to me but it has and it has truly opened my eyes to the power of food as medicine.
I’m not a nutritionist or a medical professional and cannot provide advice on diet or medical conditions, but I can share my story and experiences in the hope that I inspire others to start their journey to health. After all, it’s there for the taking!
